What is DevLys 010?
DevLys 010 is a pre-Unicode Hindi font. A file typed in it does not hold Devanagari at all: it holds plain keyboard characters, and the font paints each one as a Hindi letter. On a machine where DevLys is installed the page looks normal. Copy the same lines into WhatsApp, an email, a web form or a phone, and राजस्थान सरकार shows up as jktLFkku ljdkj. Converting to Unicode turns those characters into real Hindi letters that every device can display without any special font.
Who still types in DevLys
In Rajasthan, DevLys 010 is the font of government Hindi typing. Coaching and practice sites for the Rajasthan Staff Selection Board's LDC and Junior Assistant exams describe the Hindi typing test as taken in DevLys 010, so a whole generation of clerks learned on it. RajKaj, the state's integrated e-office system run by the Department of Information Technology & Communication (DoIT&C), even has its own DevLys010-to-Mangal font convertor. Years of office orders, notings, circulars and letters sit in DevLys files on department computers.
That text has to become Unicode whenever it leaves the typing computer: when an order is pasted into an e-office file or an online portal, sent on WhatsApp or email, published on a website, or searched later. Going the other way, Unicode to DevLys is needed when an old template, a typing-test practice set or a layout in PageMaker or CorelDRAW still expects DevLys characters.
DevLys and Kruti Dev: what is actually different
Very little, and it is better to know that. DevLys 010 and Kruti Dev 010 share one keyboard layout: the same key gives the same letter in both, so jktLFkku is राजस्थान in either font. Their font files even carry the same maker name and the same 1997 version string. We compared the two fonts glyph by glyph: 190 of the 195 character positions they share draw exactly the same shape (97.4%). The differences are all in the curly quote marks that Word inserts by itself:
’is drawn as श् in DevLys. Word's AutoFormat replaces the'key (श्) with this curly quote as you type, so DevLys documents are full of it. A plain Kruti Dev converter leaves it as a quote mark or turns it into ष; this page reads it as श्, as the font shows it.“is drawn as भ in DevLys, and is converted to भ here.‘and”are blank in DevLys: there is no letter behind them to recover, so they are kept as quote marks rather than silently deleted. An invisible control character that Kruti Dev draws as भ (U+0090) is empty in DevLys and is removed.
The other practical difference is the font name. When you convert Unicode back, “Copy for Word”, “Download .doc” and the .docx converter set the Hindi in DevLys 010, not Kruti Dev, so the document opens in the font your office or exam expects. Pasted Word text and .docx files are matched by font name: any DevLys face (010 up to 240, with Bold, Italic, Condensed, Thin and Wide styles) is converted, and parts in Kruti Dev are converted too because the layout is the same.
How to convert DevLys to Unicode
- Copy the text from your DevLys document. Copying straight from Word is best: English words, file numbers and dates typed in Arial or Times are recognised by their font and left alone.
- Paste it into the left box with “DevLys → Unicode” selected. The Unicode Hindi appears on the right.
- Press Copy and paste it into RajKaj, a portal, an email or WhatsApp, or download it as a Word file.
- For a full document, choose “Convert a Word file (.docx)”. Tables, headings and formatting stay; only the DevLys (and Kruti Dev) parts change, and they are set in Mangal.
- To go back, select “Unicode → DevLys”, paste Unicode Hindi and press “Copy for Word”: Hindi arrives in DevLys 010 and English in Arial.

DevLys to Unicode character table
These are all the DevLys keys and key combinations the converter knows, each with the Unicode it produces. Read it left to right: vk gives आ, {k gives क्ष. Two signs are typed out of reading order and are moved during conversion: f (the short i, ि) comes before its letter, and Z (reph, the र् written above a letter as in कार्य) comes after it. Capital letters are mostly half letters; a following k completes them, so L is स् but Lk is स.

When the converted text looks wrong
- It turned into odd letters with accents: the text may be in Chanakya, not DevLys. Chanakya text is full of characters like æ and Ú; the converter warns you when it sees that, and the Chanakya to Unicode converter is the right one for it.
- The Unicode looks scrambled inside Word: the paragraph is still set in DevLys 010. Select it and change the font to Mangal, Nirmala UI or Kokila.
- Unicode → DevLys shows English letters: that is the DevLys encoding itself. It only looks like Hindi after the text is set in the DevLys 010 font, which “Copy for Word” does for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between DevLys and Kruti Dev?
For typing and converting, almost none. DevLys 010 and Kruti Dev 010 use the same keyboard layout, so the same keys give the same Hindi letters, and 190 of the 195 character positions the two fonts share draw the same shape. The differences are curly quote marks: in DevLys ’ shows श् and “ shows भ, while ‘ and ” are blank. This converter handles those, and writes DevLys 010 as the font when you convert Unicode back to DevLys.
Why does my DevLys text show as jktLFkku or random English letters?
DevLys stores Hindi as ordinary keyboard characters that only look like Hindi when the DevLys font is installed. Phones, browsers, WhatsApp and most portals do not have it, so they show the raw characters. Paste that text here and it becomes Unicode Hindi that displays everywhere.
Some श became ष or a quote mark in another converter. Why?
Word's AutoFormat changes the ' key, which is श् in DevLys, into a curly ’ while you type. The DevLys font still draws श्, but converters that only know Kruti Dev do not, so the letter comes out wrong. This converter reads ’ as श् automatically.
How do I set the font in Word after converting?
After DevLys → Unicode, select the text and choose a Unicode Hindi font such as Mangal, Nirmala UI or Kokila; if the paragraph is left in DevLys 010 the Unicode text looks broken. After Unicode → DevLys, use “Copy for Word” or the .doc / .docx download, which set the Hindi in DevLys 010 for you; DevLys 010 must be installed on that computer to display it.
Can I convert a whole DevLys Word file?
Yes. Click “Convert a Word file (.docx)” and pick the file. Runs in any DevLys font (and in Kruti Dev) become Unicode in Mangal; English text, tables and formatting are kept. The reverse direction sets Hindi in DevLys 010. Old .doc files need to be saved as .docx first.
